Tell us a little bit about your school…
Nonsuch Primary School is a small single form entry primary school on the border of the London Borough of Sutton and Surrey. We have a unique family-orientated village feel to our school which shows itself in close collaboration between all members of the school community. We are currently judged as outstanding by Ofsted. This is inconsequential. We want to give every child every opportunity to be the best they can be and we strive to constantly reflect on any systems or processes which can be transformed or tweaked to ensure that this is the case.
Why did you come to Governors for Schools and how did we help?
Our parents are keenly involved in all aspects of school life; we have no shortage of parents on our school governing body! We have, however, found it difficult to recruit governors from the local community who might bring their own unique skills and experiences to the role. We reached out to Governors for Schools to help us recruit for a number of vacancies for co-opted governors with a variety of skillsets.
What skills did they bring and how have they fitted in?
Through Governors for Schools, we have been able to appoint for the three vacancies on our governing body. We have filled the gaps in our skills around PR and communication and added valuable expertise in people with experience of secondary education and IT systems as well as experience of being members of similar groups to a governing body.
What impact have they made?
These members have only been in post for a few weeks but they have brought a fresh energy to the governing body and have been proactive in coming into school and learning more about how we do things at Nonsuch. We are really excited about the potential impact these appointments will make to the governance of our school and are delighted to have three new members from outside the immediate school community who are able to bring a new perspective to the strategic leadership of our school.
How has working with Governors for Schools benefited your school?
…not only being able to appoint governors, where we were unable to before, but by making the process so simple and hassle-free.”
